The United Arab Emirates has passed its first federal data privacy law, in force as of January 2, 2022. Aligning well with global privacy regulation best practice, the Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) standardizes data protection for companies operating in and/or serving data subjects who are residents of the UAE.
Under the UAE PDP Law, data subjects have rights over their personal data, including the “right to information and access”, “right to rectification/ blocking/ erasure”, “right to data portability”, and the “right to object”.
The Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (“PDPA”) is an Act that regulates the processing of personal data in regards to commercial transactions. It was gazetted in June 2010.
